Combining the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) retransmission at different stages in the OFDM / OFDMA receiver a method and apparatus are provided for . Combinations of different types of HARQ combiner may be selected for each channel can be designed into the receiver . Proper selection of the HARQ combining scheme may reduce the required HARQ buffer size and may provide a combined gain is increased as compared to the conventional HARQ combining techniques . In addition, the HARQ combiner type , in an effort to reduce the bit error rate (BER) without saturating the HARQ buffer between different types of HARQ combining scheme can be dynamically selected by the forward and backward shifting .
