The invention concerns a process for the removal of sulphur compounds from ahydrocarbon stream, especially a gaseous hydrocarbon gas stream, comprisingsaid sulphur compounds, which process comprises contacting said gas streamwith an adsorbent comprising a zeolite having a pore diameter of at least 5.ANG. to adsorb the sulphur compounds thereon, the adsorption process followedby a regeneration process of used, loaded adsorbent by contacting the saidloaded adsorbent with a regeneration gas stream having a relative waterhumidity less than 100 %, especially less than 80 %. Suitably the regenerationis followed by a dry regeneration treatment. The invention further relates toa process for the regeneration of adsorbent comprising a zeolite having a porediameter of at least 5 .ANG. loaded with sulphur compounds by contacting theadsorbent with a regeneration gas stream having a relative water humidity lessthan 100 %, especially less than 80 %. Suitably the regeneration is followedby a dry regeneration treatment.
