A plant cell transformed with tolerance and / or increased drought as compared to a wild plant cell type untransformed resistance, and wherein the transgenic plant cell is transformed by a overexpressed nucleic acid encoding a related Protein Stress (SRP) and said nucleic acid is selected from the group consisting of: a) nucleic acid molecule encoding the polypeptide shown in SEQ ID NO: 2, which confers increased drought as compared to a wild type variety of the host cell tolerance; b) nucleic acid molecule comprising the nucleic acid molecule shown in SEQ ID NO: 1; c) nucleic acid molecule whose sequence can be deduced from a polypeptide sequence encoded by a nucleic acid molecule of (a) or (b) as a result of the degeneracy of the genetic code and which confers increased drought tolerance compared to a wild type variety of the host cell; d) nucleic acid molecule encoding a polypeptide having at least 80% identity with the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide encoded by the nucleic acid molecule of (a) to (c) and confers increased drought tolerance compared to a wild type variety of the host cell; e) nucleic acid molecule which hybridizes with a nucleic acid molecule of (a) to (c) under stringent hybridization and confers increased drought as compared to a wild type variety of the host cell tolerance; or comprising a sequence which is complementary thereto.
