The invention relates to a method for pointing out the self-similarity of packet traffic in the Internet, providing information needed for designing computer network architecture and ensuring service quality throughout the network. According to the invention, the method consists of a series of steps to be performed sequentially, namely: making (1) the topology of the network nodes, making (2) the topology of traffic sources, performing (3) a traffic simulation, the data captured from the simulation being placed in a time series, estimating (4) the Hurst self-similarity parameter and then using a decision block for determining (5) whether the traffic has a self-similar nature or not, information intended to be stored (6) in a data base.
