Nymphayol [17-(hexan-2-yl)-10, 13-dimethylhexadecahydro-lH-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren -3-ol], a novel crystal was isolated from chloroform extract of Nymphaea stellata Willd. Flower. It elicited significant hypoglycemic activity (60.33%) in Streptozotocin-diabetic rats and altered the pattern of glucose tolerance in diabetic rats. In addition, Nymphayol treatment increased plasma insulin levels significantly in streptozotocin-diabetic rats. The hypoglycemic effect of the Nymphayol was comparable with glibenclamide.
