PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for providing a lithium ion secondary battery having high discharge capacity and excelling in initial charge-discharge capacity and a cycle characteristic. PSOLUTION: The metal-graphite based particles of this application contain metal particles capable of being alloyed with lithium, a plurality of graphitic particles having an average particle diameter of 2-5 m and an aspect ratio not greater than 3 and a carbonaceous material; and is characterized in that the average particle diameter of the metal particles is not greater than 1/2 of that of the graphitic particles.
