Disclosed is a real-time clock circuit, using an oscillator and a counter, coupled to an output of the oscillator to generate a real-time clock value. The circuit has two modes of operation, in the first mode the oscillator is configured to generate oscillations and the counter increments the real-time clock value based on the oscillations. In the second mode the oscillator is stopped, and the counter is configured to retain the real-time clock value at a frozen value, the value being the value at the time the oscillator stopped. The modes may relate to the supply of power to the clock circuit, such that in the first mode power is supplied to the circuit by the main power source eg mains or main battery, whereas in the second mode power is supplied by a capacitor. The circuit may switch to the second mode when the voltage downs below a threshold or the when the oscillator is disabled or powered down. The real-time clock circuit is designed to be used in laptop/notebook computers, PDAs, media players, mobile phones, GPS navigation devices and other such small battery powered systems.
