The invention relates to a method and a device for transforming a Gaussian laser beam into a "top-hat" laser beam. The method consists in using the optical Kerr effect in the materials by passing the Gaussian laser beam through a non-linear material (2), which modifies the refractive index of the non-linear medium and therefore the spatial phase of the laser beam. . This modification of the spatial phase modifies the propagation of the laser beam and creates a zone (4) in the virtual space in which the laser beam has a uniform or annular energy distribution. An optical system (8) then realizes a real image of this area (4).
