The method involves detecting a lane e.g. right lane, lying in front of a motor car (2), and storing lane information in a lane memory (22). A past travel path of the motor car is detected. A lane course of the past travel path is determined from the information of the lane and the past travel path. The lane course of past travel distance is graphically displayed to a driver in a rearview mirror (16) and/or a monitor of the motor car in a correct position. Collision risk objects e.g. bicyclist, behind and/or beside the motor car are detected for attention of the driver. An independent claim is also included for a lane change assistance system.
