The heater (10) has an electrical heating device (14) for heating an edge area of a front pane (12), where the edge area lies outside a wiping area of a windscreen wiper (20). The edge area is connected to corresponding upper and lower end position areas of the wiping area. A heatable area of the pane extends into the windscreen wiper over a wiper rubber (18). The heating device includes an electrical heating wire and a channel (30) that is formed in a frame (28) of the pane, where a heating medium e.g. cooling fluid or cooling air, flows through the channel. An independent claim is also included for a method for heating a pane of a motor vehicle.
