The method involves detecting a relative target distance of the preceding vehicle (3) from a detection region (4) of a sensor arrangement (5). The recognition of the preceding vehicle or detection of a next preceding vehicle (6) is determined on the basis of a connection speed which is a function of speed of the next preceding vehicle. The speed of the vehicle (1) is regulated temporarily on the basis of connection speed.
