The method involves selecting a service life-extending technical measure, and defining unique and annual costs for selecting the technical measure. Multiple statistical service life extensions are determined from annular repair and maintenance cost during simultaneous execution of multiple technical measures. The measure or combination of the measures is determined by comparing lowest statistical annual repair and maintenance cost over a new service life with statistical annual repair and maintenance cost without the service life-extending measure over remaining service life. The service life-extending technical measure is selected from a group comprising oscillation analysis, particle counting, video endoscopy, oil sampling, storage temperature measurement, operation difficulty measurement, side stream filtration, manual inspection, bearing lubrication, bearing over sizing, investigation by a digital camera, resistance test, oscillation monitoring or film coating.
