The assembly (1) has a pulsed infrared guiding and working laser (3) present in a housing (8) that is force-fittingly or form-fittingly installed on a roof of a towing vehicle. The laser is formed as a detection laser in a defined working area to detect a position of an icy contact wire (4) in a quadratic area parallel to a lower side of the contact wire. Side length of the quadratic area corresponds to width of current collectors (11). Energy acts upon freezing of the contact wire in a stand state and during a drive state such that a crystal structure of contact wire icing (9) is burst open. An independent claim is also included for a method for eliminating ice formation on contact wires.
