The method involves evaluating the surrounding image with a character recognition method according to an identification mark (6) arranged on a garage rear wall (3b) after the identification of the garage doorway. The position of the vehicle (5) is determined with regard to the garage doorway and the identification mark after locating the identification mark. The control signals required for controlling the vehicle at the parking area (1) are generated depending on the determined position of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing the method.
