The device for quenching metallic workpieces with a quenching gas, comprises a quenching chamber (4) for the reception of the quenching good and a flow channel (6) connected with the quenching chamber for introducing a flow circuit. A blower (7) is arranged in the flow channel for circulating the quenching gases in the flow circuit. Means (9) for flow-technical coupling and decoupling of the blowers on and/or by the quenching chamber are provided. The means are formed and arranged in such a way that the section of the flow channel having the blower is sealable against the quenching chamber. The device for quenching metallic workpieces with a quenching gas, comprises a quenching chamber (4) for the reception of the quenching good and a flow channel (6) connected with the quenching chamber for introducing a flow circuit. A blower (7) is arranged in the flow channel for circulating the quenching gases in the flow circuit. Means (9) for flow-technical coupling and decoupling of the blowers on and/or by the quenching chamber are provided. The means are formed and arranged in such a way that the section of the flow channel having the blower is sealable against the quenching chamber. The means comprise a first shut-off element arranged in a flow direction (13) of the quenching gas before the blower, and a second shut-off elements arranged in the flow direction of the quenching gas behind the blower. The first shut-off element is arranged in the area of a mouth opening of the flow channel and/or the second shut-off element is arranged in the area of outlet opening of the flow channel. The shut-off elements are formed as sliding doors. A pivotable flap is arranged in the flow direction of the quenching gases after the blower as shut-off elements. Means for flooding the quenching chamber with the quenching gas and means for recompressing the quenching gases after a quenching process are provided. A control device is provided that initializes a starting of the blower before the flow-technical coupling of the blowers at the quenching chamber. An independent claim is included for a method for quenching of metallic workpieces with a quenching gas.
