The method involves determining temperature of a transmission oil (2) or engine oil using a temperature sensor (4). Filling level sensors (5, 6) are electrically supplied by considering an electrical current value, where the sensors are designed as a positive-temperature coefficient sensor and negative-temperature coefficient sensor. The sensors are immersed in transmission- or engine oil, when electrical resistance change of the sensors is determined as small. The sensors are not immersed in the transmission- or engine oil, when resistance change of the sensors is determined as large. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining filling level of the oil at the transmission or the engine of a vehicle.
