The method involves charging a rechargeable energy storage (2) i.e. accumulator, from an external main supply (5) in a charging operation mode, and providing current into the external main supply in a discharging operation mode. A control device (13) is provided for selecting the operating modes from different operation modes of the energy storage. A user requirement is detected directly and provided with certain operational sequence. The operating mode is selected additionally depending on a variable of state of the storage and the main supply. An independent claim is also included for a drive system for a motor vehicle.
