The method involves making a mixture of an internal combustion engine (100) lean in a cylinder (102a), and detecting running smoothness difference between the cylinder and another cylinder (102c). Running smoothness of the cylinders is determined. The internal combustion engine is regulated by a lambda sensor (112). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising instructions to perform a method for operating an internal combustion engine (2) an electrical storage medium for a control and/or regulating device of an internal combustion engine to perform a method for operating the internal combustion engine (3) a control and/or regulating device of an internal combustion engine to perform a method for operating the internal combustion engine.
