The method involves carrying-out transfer of charges between cells of a battery system over a transfer unit, where the transfer unit has a capacitor (1) and a switching matrix. The transfer unit is selectively coupled with a microcontroller (5) or a digital controller over an interface (6), where the microcontroller controls the switching matrix. The charges are determined through measurement of current intensity and current direction for influencing equalization and/or transfer process of the charges or for determining condition of the cells. An independent claim is also included for a device for energy transfer between cells of a battery system.
