FIELD: physics.;SUBSTANCE: method can be realised by a stand-alone radar set mounted on a ship when there is completely no radar reflection from the object but only a trace - anomaly on the sea surface. Before detecting the trace, the average inclination of large waves on the sea surface the propagation speed of surface (wind) waves on the sea surface (Vsw) and the propagation speed of sound waves over the sea surface (νs) are determined. After detecting the trace using a radar technique, the range to the front of the trace Dfr and the bearing to the front of the trace Pfr are determined. The width of the trace Vmeas is the measured using a range radar strobing method. The course of the object Cob is determined by the spatial orientation of the trace. The course angle from the front of the trace to the radar set βfr is calculated from Cob and Pfr. The angle of approach of the radar set and the object α is calculated from Cob and the course of the carrier of the radar set Cr.
