Light from a light source means (a tunable laser (61)) is irradiated upon the film surface of a surface plasmon resonance element for hydrogen detection (65) that forms, on a thin film of a hydrogen storage metal, a surface plasmon resonance enhanced structure by disposing an array of cyclical openings, which comprise openings with a shape that does not have 90 degree rotational symmetry, within the film surface; and transmitted light is detected with a light detecting means (an actinograph (62)). Hydrogen is detected on the basis of changes in the light transmission frequency characteristics that accompany hydrogen absorption in the surface plasmon resonance element for hydrogen detection (65). Highly stable optical hydrogen detection that is not influenced by fluctuations in the amount of light from a light source or stray light is possible.
