Method for detecting the presence and / or amount of methylated cytosines specific to liver cancer in a region containing CpG sequences in the BASP1 gene and optionally the SRD5A2 gene comprising the following steps (a) to (d): (a) isolating genomic DNA from a patient sample; (B) contacting a reagent for chemical or enzymatic treatment with genomic DNA to discriminate between methylated cytosines and unmethylated; (C) amplifying a region containing methylated cytosines of BASP1 gene and optionally the SRD5A2 gene in the genomic DNA using a PCR method; and (d) determining the presence and / or amount of methylated cytosine specific to liver cancer in a region containing CpG sequences of BASP1 gene and optionally the SRD5A2 gene in the sample of said patient, so that the presence and / or amount of cytosine specific methylated liver cancer indicate that the patient is afflicted with a liver cancer, has an increased risk of liver cancer, presents a risk of recurrence after treatment of liver cancer, it has a malignant liver cancer, or has a liver cancer which is progressing in time.
