A method is disclosed for recovering metals from a spent dispersed catalyst originating from a metal sulfide of group VIB containing at least a metal of group VB and group VIII intended for hydrogenation of petroleum oil. In one embodiment, this method includes the following steps: pyrolyzing a stream containing spent dispersed catalyst suspended in heavy oil to produce one or more light hydrocarbon products and coke-like materials; bringing the stream containing spent dispersed catalyst into contact with a leach solution containing ammonia and air to dissolve the metal of group VIB and the metal of group VIII in the leach solution at a sufficient temperature and pressure; obtaining by pressure leaching a suspension containing at least a soluble complex compound of a metal of group VIB, at least a soluble complex compound of a metal of group VIII, ammonium sulfate and a solid residue containing at least a complex compound of a metal of group VB and coke; separating and removing a solid residue containing ammonium metavanadate and coke from a solution obtained by pressure leaching (PLS); precipitation from PLS of at least a part of a metal of group VIB and at least a part of a metal of group VIII by adjusting the pH according to a preselected pH value for the purpose of selective precipitation in the form of complex compounds of metals of group VIB and group VIII.
