Methods and compositions are provided for treating a subject from post-surgical pain. According to the methods of the present invention, the subject is treated for post-surgical pain by administering to the body of said subject an effective amount of a narcotic emulsion, for example an emulsion composition based on fentanyl. In some embodiments, the emulsion compositions comprise an active drug, oil, water, and a surfactant. Also provided are methods for producing emulsion compositions that are the subject of the present invention, as well as kits comprising said emulsion compositions.
