PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately estimate the probability distribution of duration length of constituents, such as a phoneme and a syllable by reducing the influence of a rate of utterance and to highly accurately estimate the distribution of the rate of utterance. PSOLUTION: The device for estimating utterance modality is equipped with; a parameter initializing means 106; a parameter updating means 107; a convergence judging means 108; a rate-of-utterance parameter storage means 109; and a duration length parameter storage means 110. The device simultaneously estimates a rate-of-utterance parameter and a duration length parameter by operating so as to update the rate-of-utterance parameter specifying the distribution of the rate of utterance and the duration length parameter specifying the distribution of the duration length recursively until they converge so that the the given data of the duration length is best explained.
