PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the distribution characteristics of the wavelength dispersion value in the longitudinal direction of various kinds of optical fibers with high precision.;SOLUTION: Linearly-polarized probe pulse light and pump pulse light, of which the wavelength is different from that of the probe pulse light and of which the polarization condition is the same as that of the probe pulse light, are allowed to enter an optical fiber 5 to be measured. At least either the intensity vibration of the backscattered beam of the probe pulse light caused by Rayleigh scattering or the intensity vibration of the backscattered light of idler beam caused by nonlinear phenomenon is measured. The instantaneous frequency of the measured intensity vibration is determined. The dependence of the instantaneous frequency on the intensity vibration of the pump light in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber to be measured 5 is determined. From the dependence of the instantaneous frequency, the amount of change in phase mismatching conditions and the nonlinear constant in the fiber longitudinal direction are measured. On the basis of the amount of change, the distribution in the fiber longitudinal direction for at least either the wavelength dispersion value or the nonlinear constant is determined.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
