A handheld surveying unit is disclosed for surveying buildings. The unit comprises an electronic processing means, a display screen, a user input means, software for constructing a plan of a building, a data acquisition means comprising a distance measuring device for measuring distance of the device to a remote object, and an input output port. The unit is configured to provide prompts to a user to construct a plan of a building to be surveyed. These include prompts to acquire data from the data acquisition means at points identified on the plan of the building. The distance measuring device may comprise a laser range measuring device. The unit may further comprise a camera, wherein a detector of the distance measuring device and the camera may share a common optical sensor. The distance measuring device may use a time of flight and/or a triangulation method to measure distance. The unit may further comprise a prism for splitting laser light emitted by the distance measuring device into a plurality of beams. The unit is particularly suited for obtaining the required data for surveying and marketing of a property, and may be used to provide the information required by a home information pack.
