Method for in vitro determination of the expression level of cyclophilin D (CypD) in a biological sample comprises measuring the expression level of CypD in the biological sample and comparing the expression level to the reference sample, where expression level is associated with the presence or risk of developing diabetes if it is significantly lower than the reference sample. Independent claims are included for: (1) use of one or more specific reactive agent(s) of the expression of the gene encoding CypD to determine in vitro predisposition, for the presence and/or monitoring diabetes in a subject; and (2) kit for the determination of predisposition, and presence and/or monitoring diabetes comprising: one or more specific reactive agents of the expression of the gene encoding CypD and adapted to the type of biological material extracted from the biological sample; optionally the reactive agents and/or necessary devices and adapted in function of type of material to perform the extraction of biological material and optionally the reactive agents and/or necessary devices and adapted for the detection and/or relative quantification of gene expression encoding CypD compared to that of a reference sample (control positive).
