The method involves desulfating a nitrogen oxide trap (12) of a short exhaust conduit (9) and a nitrogen oxide trap (13) of a common exhaust conduit (10) with a cylinder block (2) controlled in a mode producing a reduced exhaust gas flow, and with another cylinder block (3) controlled in a desulfation mode with a high load rate. Desulfation of a nitrogen oxide trap (11) of a long exhaust conduit (8) is carried out with the former cylinder block controlled in the desulfation mode and the latter cylinder block controlled in a normal mode.
