The method involves estimating speed of a motor vehicle based on data independent from measurement of an odometer, when the vehicle speed derived from the measurement of the odometer is less than or equal to a predetermined threshold value, where the odometer is used for measuring angular speed of a wheel of the vehicle. Stopping of the vehicle is confirmed by null vehicle speed deduced from the measurement delivered by the odometer, when the estimated vehicle speed is null.
