The method involves providing a surrounding detection device with ultrasonic sensors for detecting objects and for detecting free areas in the surrounding of a vehicle (101), where the sensors are arranged at a body of the vehicle. Warning signals are outputted based on the detected free areas in a monitoring mode of the collision avoidance system. The monitoring mode is activated when the vehicle is stopped, where only the sensors are active in the monitoring mode. The sensors are deactivated when the objects are entered into the free areas.
