The device has a rotor (1) and a stator steel wall (3) surrounding a housing. An additional wearable coating (2) is arranged at the housing between the rotor and the stator steel wall. A sensor i.e. ultrasonic transducer (5), detects a boundary layer between the stator steel wall and the coating and a boundary layer between the coating and a liquid medium. An evaluation device evaluates a critical thickness of the coating. A capacitive sensor is arranged in the coating for detecting distance of a boundary layer between the coating and an internal liquid medium.
