The diagnostic system has an adaptive learning module that determines the temperature-frequency relationship based on a first intake air temperature, a second intake air temperature, a first frequency and a second frequency. An intake air temperature determination module determines the first intake air temperature using an intake air temperature sensor (32) at a first time and the second intake air temperature using the intake air temperature sensor at a second time. A reference temperature determination module determines a first frequency based on the first voltage output of a mass air flow sensor (34) at a first time and determines the second frequency based on the second voltage output of the mass air flow sensor at a second time. An independent claim is included for an intake air temperature sensor diagnosing method.
