The method involves detecting ambient data, which mark the surrounding objects of a vehicle (1). A collision danger of the vehicle with the objects is recognized by the ambient data. The collision danger of an object (3) goes out behind the vehicle. Another object (5) is recognized before the vehicle. The collision danger is eliminated or reduced by a testing whether a sufficient side escape route (17) is present for driving around the latter object.
