The method involves determining combustion characteristics of operating phases of a cylinder chamber by an engine control device based on engine parameters. The combustion characteristics are determined for evaluation of a combustion position of the operating phases for predicting pre-ignition for each operating phases of multiple combustion points between a combustion starting point (alpha05) and a combustion ending point (alpha90) of course of entire conversion of a fuel-air-mixture in the chamber. An existing pre-ignition is pre-determined, during temporal prior conversion of the fuel.
