The method involves determining a loading condition of a selective catalytic reduction catalyzer (12) with a substance of an exhaust gas mixture different from a reducing agent, where the mixture is sorbed from the catalyzer. A parameter of the mixture is measured to obtain a measured value. A difference between the measured value and a comparison value is computed. The difference is compared with a reference value. A test value is determined from the comparison result, and compared with a limit value. A comparison result of the test value with the limit value is output in a form of a signal.
