The method involves accelerating a rotor element of a vacuum pump over a predetermined time interval, and determining rotor speed at an end of the time interval. A pump type is determined based on the rotor speed and a type-dependent mass-inertia moment. The pump type is assigned to predetermined rotor speed if the predetermined rotor speed falls in a rotor speed margin assigned to the pump type. The mass-moments of inertia of the pump type are identified and determined. The pump type is stored in a table depending on the predetermined mass-moment of inertia and/or the motor speed margin.
