The device (1) has a retaining device (2) retaining a patient (P) in a horizontal position and designed as a bed (5). A sensor (3) measures a work weight, where the work weight that includes dead weight of the patient and a part of dead weight of the device. A display unit (4) reproduces information to determine the dead weight of the patient. The sensor is integrated into a bed frame (6) and into a bed post (6a). A fixing unit (7) fixes the bed in a hanging manner. A control unit is communicated with the sensor. The control unit includes a storing unit for storing the work weight. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining change of a dead weight of a physically immobile patient.
