The diffractive optical element has a glass layer (1) and a substrate layer (2) which are firmly bonded with each other by compression molding. A diffractive optical structure is formed in the glass layer. The substrate layer is made of metal or silicon. The glass layer is a chalcogenide glass, a sulfide glass, a selenide glass, a halide glass, a germanate glass, lanthanum-hard-flint glass, calcium aluminum silicate glass, lead silicate glass, flourophosphate glass, calcium aluminate glass or a zinc crown glass. An independent claim is included for a method for manufacturing a diffractive optical element.
