The controller (U) is designed to produce and output continuous control signals (Sc) in response to and depending on switching signals (Su), where the control signals activate a power saving mode of a microprocessor (C). The controller is designed for processing of switching signals of a sensor (S) and/or a vehicle bus (B). The control signals change an operating frequency of the microprocessor. The controller is realized as a stand-alone functional hardware unit and in the form of an operating system function of software of the microprocessor. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a microprocessor.
