The device (SG) has a microcontroller forming a decision for controlling a passenger protection unit (PS) based on a sensor signal e.g. rotatary motion signal, and a safety controller (SCON) generating a release signal for controlling the protection unit based on the sensor signal. A control circuit (FLIC) controls the protection unit based on the decision and the release signal. The microcontroller and the controller comprise interfaces (10, 11) for a control device-external bus, where the sensor signal is provided to the microcontroller and the controller over the bus. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a passenger protection unit in a vehicle.
