The method involves executing a scanning movement of a laser light beam by a beam deflecting unit (7) independent of pivoting axes (6, 8). A speed of the scanning movement of the beam around one of the pivoting axes is selected higher than a speed of the scanning movement of the beam around another pivoting axis. A central electronics (15) is provided for controlling range, sequence and resolution of acquisition of data of scanning points in a receiving range area. The beam is utilized for measuring and displaying the data of the scanning points. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for scanning a three dimensional surface of an object.
