Producing acrylic acid from glycerol comprises (a) dehydrating glycerol to acrolein in the gas phase in a dehydration unit in the presence of dehydration catalysts to obtain a gaseous acrolein phase and (b) oxidizing the acrolein in an oxidation unit (9) in the presence of oxidation catalysts to obtain a gaseous acrylic acid phase. The dehydration unit includes two catalyst portion separated from each other and having different catalyst activity. The first catalyst portion catalyzes the dehydration of glycerol to the formation of acrolein, while the second catalysis portion is regenerated. Independent claims are included for: (1) a device for producing acrylic acid from glycerol, comprising (A) an evaporation unit (1) including at least an evaporator, (B) a dehydration unit containing (B1) at least one dehydration reactor and (B2) at least one regenerator, where both the dehydration reactor and the regenerator include a dehydration catalyst, (C) an oxidation unit comprising at least an oxidation reactor that includes an oxidation catalyst, (D) optionally a condensing unit (15) containing at least a capacitor that is located between the dehydration unit (B) and the oxidation unit (C) and (E) optionally an analysis device (7) for the determination of glycerol-turnover in the dehydration unit (B); and (2) use of a Riser-Downer-reactor system in the conversion of glycerol to acrolein.
