The method involves detecting the light ratio of the surrounding light in the shelf space by a one of the solar cells of the detection unit (32). The generated electrical energy of one of the solar cells is guided partly to one or more electrically operated consumers of the detection unit for energy supply. An independent claim is included for a detection unit for detecting an article carrier or article arranged at a shelf space of a shelf.
