The system has a wavelength converter (1) connecting two optical fibers (6, 7) e.g. glass fiber and polymer optical fiber, together, where the optical fibers exhibit different transmission properties that respectively include different regions of smallest wavelength-dependent attenuation. Each region of the smallest wavelength-dependent attenuation lies between 1300 nm and 1700 nm with the glass fiber and between 400 nm and 700 nm with the polymer optical fiber. The wavelength converter includes an optical non-linear medium (3) i.e. lithium niobate.
