The method involves providing an angular contact bearing arrangement (1) with a pinion shaft (2) and two angular contact bearings (5, 6). The bearings are tensioned and engaged against each other. The shaft is rotatably supported in housing sections (4) by the bearings. Length changes of the shaft resulting from prestress in the arrangement are directly determined at the shaft using an ultrasonic measuring method. Characteristics of ultrasonic impulses are determined based on the length changes and compared with reference values. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing a method for measuring prestress in an axially prestressed angular contact bearing arrangement.
