The method involves discharging a charged photoconductor element e.g. photoconductor drum, to a discharge voltage (Ue) by a character generator according to images to be printed. Charge patterns are developed into toner images by a developer station supplied with a bias voltage (Ubias). The bias voltage of the developer station is changed depending on a temperature change, such that a difference of the bias voltage to the discharge voltage remains constant and corresponds to a reference value. A discharge mark is measured by a potential sensor.
