Disclosed is a method for partitioning a region represented by contours into smaller polygonal zones which are able to express the geographic features of the region well and calculating digital elevation model data and geographic surface configuration data by using the same. Geographic partitioning is implemented by comprising the steps of: using contour sets to obtain a medial axis for each sub-domain that is a zone between adjacent contours; then partitioning the each sub-domain into smaller zones for the all segments of the medial axis. The method: calculates a geographic feature for each smaller zone after the geographic partitioning; and then calculates the elevation of each lattice point of a digital elevation model (DEM) by interpolating the elevations of the adjacent two contours based on an interpolation method which is predetermined according to the geographic feature of the smaller zone that includes the lattice points. Monotone rational Hermite spline or convex rational Hermite spline is used for the interpolation calculation, and the elevation of a desired point can be calculated from the contour sets. Surface reconfiguration data are obtained in the case of: partitioning the segments of the medial axis into the smaller zones; then straightening the segments of the medial axis; and then calculating three-dimensional coordinates for the polygons of the partitioned smaller zones. The DEM resulting from the aforementioned technology can be used for the orthorectification of high resolution satellite or aerial images. In addition, the DEM is applicable to various fields such as visualization of the surface of the earth, elevation calculation of a certain surface point, and the like.
