The invention relates to measuring a work piece (52), wherein at least one point (53) of a surface of the work piece (52) is sampled by a feeler (11), wherein the feeler (11) exerts a probing force (f') on the surface (51) and the feeler (11) is deflected relative to a mounting of the feeler (11). On the basis of the deflection (vector a), a position of the point (53) of the surface is determined. A directional dependence of a flexibility of the feeler (11) is determined and/or is known. The feeler (11) and the work piece (52) are positioned and/or oriented relative to each other, while taking into consideration the directional dependence, such that during sampling of the point (53) of the surface (51) unintentional slipping of the feeler (11) on the surface (51) does not occur, or occurs only with low probability, or an unintentional deviation of the feeler (11) from an intended path on the surface (51) does not occur, or occurs only with low probability.
