Provided is a preparation for external use containing a fungus belonging to the genus Cordyceps. The preparation for external use is useful for treating a disease or condition associated with melanin formation or rough skin. As the fungus belonging to the genus Cordyceps, Cordyceps sinensis, Cordyceps militaris (Vuill.) Fr. or Cordyceps sobolifera (Hill.) Berk. et Br. can be used. Cordyceps sobolifera (Hill.) Berk. et Br. is a particularly preferred example. The fungus belonging to the genus Cordyceps is particularly preferably used as a hot-water extract from a fruiting body. The hot-water extract may be incorporated in the preparation for external use in an amount of from 10 ppm to 1000 ppm, preferably from 25 ppm to 500 ppm, more preferably from 50 ppm to 250 ppm.
